Columbus, OH Air Conditioning Components: What is a Condensate Drain?
All Columbus, OH air conditioning installation, repair, and or maintenance services that you may need should only be completed by a licensed, professional technician. That being said, the AC experts at Quality Air Heating and Air Conditioning believe that it is important for homeowners to understand some of the basic components featured in their air conditioning system. This is a great way to ensure that you’ll be able to recognize the need for an air conditioning repair in the future. One important, but frequently overlooked component of your AC system is the condensate drain.
During the air conditioning process, your AC obviously cools warm air. While it does so, though, it also has a dehumidifying effect on that air. The moisture in the air condenses on your cooling coils, and then drains into your condensate pan. From there, a condensate drain will carry this water away from your system and out of your home to prevent it from building up and putting your property at risk of damage. This operation is not always problem free, though.
We often receive service calls regarding leaking air conditioning systems. Frequently what homeowners perceive to be a leak is actually a case of an overflowing condensate pan. Dirt and or debris can build up in your condensate drain, and this can cause a backup. When the drain pan can no longer accommodate the condensation that is a byproduct of the cooling process it will overflow. By having your condensate drain cleaned and changing your air filter regularly, you can help minimize the risk of this problem. If it is a frequent occurrence you may want to consider the installation of a condensate float switch, which will shut your system off when the condensate reaches a certain point.
